Biopsy
Bone Biopsy
Bone biopsy is generally performed to evaluate patients with metabolic
bone disease, bone pain or indications of primary bone cancer, or
the spread of metastases. If metabolic disease is suspected, the
pelvic bone is usually the preferred biopsy site. Depending on the
information needed, other bones may be biopsied to include the spine,
ribs and extremities. Bone biopsy procedures involve use of a small
drill to provide access to the bone for the biopsy needle.
Patients generally can tolerate bone biopsy with a local anesthetic.
In some circumstances, sedation may be necessary.
For more information, see general
biopsy information.
