Biopsy
Kidney Biopsy

Kidney (renal biopsy) is performed by a radiologist using a needle under ultrasound or CT guidance. Information provided by kidney (renal) biopsy is used by nephrologists (kidney specialists) to evaluate the kidney. Renal biopsy can assist your doctor in treatment planning and prognosis. It may be used to diagnose the cause of kidney disease and to differentiate between primary and metastatic lesions in the kidney. Renal biopsy may also be used to gauge rejection after kidney transplant. Kidneys are highly vascular (full of blood vessels). The potential for bleeding following renal biopsy is high and may be treated by embolization if necessary. Complete blood cell counts 4 and 24 hours post procedure will show any drop in hemoglobin and hematocrit, indications of internal bleeding.
