Breast MRI
This safe advanced breast imaging procedure is used in special circumstances
and generally requires referral by a surgeon, oncologist or breast specialist.
MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) uses magnetic fields and radio
frequencies to generate cross sectional images of the body, often
detecting a contrast material that has been injected into a vein. Breast
MRI is coupled
with a new form of CAD technology allowing for increased diagnostic
sensitivity and the ability to share customized reports with referring physicians.
It
is capable of detecting tumors as small as four to five millimeters
(size of a pea), yet requires careful correlation with other imaging modalities
including mammography and high resolution ultrasound.
Breast MRI may be useful for:
- clarification when conventional mammography and ultrasound show
only vague abnormalities
- treatment planning for select patients with breast cancer
- women genetically considered at high risk for developing breast
cancer
- evaluation of breast implants for leakage or rupture
