New Technology
CAD (Computer Aided Diagnostics)
Studies Show CAD Analysis Increases
Sensitivity of Mammography by 15 - 20%.
Indications
Routine screening mammography — patient without symptoms.
Please see Screening
Mammogram with CAD
Overview
TRA uses computer aided detection (CAD) on all screening mammograms
performed at our outpatient offices. This technology has been shown
to improve the accuracy of screening mammography interpretation.
CAD technology enables a second reading of digitized mammography
film following initial interpretation by a radiologist. Using sophisticated
pattern recognition software algorithms designed to detect regions
of interest, it marks them. The radiologist then reviews the film
again to determine if the marked areas are suspicious and require
further evaluation. CAD received FDA approval in 1998 and is now
reimbursed by Medicare, Medicaid and most insurance.
What patients need to know
TRA Medical Imaging now utilizes CAD technology on all
screening mammography performed at all TRA offices. CAD technology
functions much like a second reading or a spell checker, reviewing
a patient’s mammogram film after the radiologist has made
an initial interpretation. Most insurance companies now provide
coverage for CAD including Medicare. In no circumstances will the
charge exceed $25.50.
