Overview
State-of-the-art high-field short bore MRI technology is best for patient comfort and image quality. 50% shorter
and 5% wider in diameter than conventional high field magnets, short bore MRI minimizes claustrophobic effect
and can provide a superior alternative to open MRI for many patients.
Short bore's smooth magnetic field and fast gradients maximize image resolution and speed. This MRI technology
offers the shortest scan times and less risk of motion artifact. These qualities are particularly helpful for
imaging the chest, abdomen or pelvis and for imaging the arteries.
What patients need to know
- Short bore MRI is the best MRI for patient comfort and image quality.
- Preparation and contraindications for exam are the same as any MRI exam. Scheduler must be advised if patient
has experienced previous contrast reaction or allergies, is pregnant, has implants or metal in his/her body.
Patients must weigh less than 400 lbs for short bore MRI exam. Prior authorization is generally required by
insurance.
- MRI does not involve radiation and has no known harmful effects on humans. MRI examination does involve
the use of strong magnetic fields. Patient will be asked to remove any nonferrous metal jewelry for the procedure.
- The office visit typically lasts one hour, with 30 minutes of "scan" time.
- To ensure image quality it will be necessary for patients to lie still, generally on their back. Some may
benefit from an oral sedative during the procedure.
- A contrast agent, may be administered by IV injection during the procedure to enhance image results.
- Results are typically sent to requesting physician within 24 hours.
