Anxiety / Claustrophobia
Claustrophobia and anxiety have been known to be an issue with medical
imaging patients—especially during the first exam. TRA technologists
and tech aides (those assisting you with your exam) are well trained
and experienced in handling claustrophobia and anxiety. They are
available to
help you feel as comfortable and safe as possible throughout your exam.
If you have any concerns about completing an MRI examination or
other procedure, be sure to express them to the technologist.
Also, consider the following:
- Learn more about your exam by reading what
to expect and how to prepare for your examination .
- Consider stopping by the outpatient center before your appointment
to look at the equipment and talk to a technologist or tech
aide.
- If you are having an MRI or PET examination, bring your favorite
CD—most of our MRI and PET scanning rooms have stereos. Ask for
a soothing eye pillow or recliner glasses (special glasses that help
you to
see outside MRI unit while lying on your back). All scanning
rooms are air conditioned.
Sedation and your exam:
- If you require sedation, ask your healthcare provider to authorize
us to provide you with oral sedation medication.
- If you prefer to bring your own oral sedation medication, bring
it with you in its original container (so we can monitor
your dose) and take it when you are instructed to do so.
- Avoid caffeinated products on the day of your examination.
- You will be required to sign a waiver requiring you to not drive
the rest of the day.
- Remember to make arrangements for someone to drive you home after
your examination. Your driver will need to sign in prior
to your appointment.
